friday night i pulled up to top spur trailhead at 10:30 PM. i went back and forth on whether to leave before dawn or wait until there was a little light. my carelessness decided for me. i forgot to set my alarm so i was up late. after some jetfoil coffee and oatmeal i was on the trail by 7. i started out in old growth fir forests, which opened up to alpine meadows and streams loaded with wild flowers. up to the shelter on mcneil point and then i decided to go further to say i stood on sandy glacier. i set my eyes on the ice caves for the first time as well. definitely lit a fire under me to get into those once conditions are safer. i logged 4k vertical ft. over 12 miles. it was a good day of solitude pushing myself and exploring a side of mt hood thats new to me.
