Saturday was a GREAT day! It was cold and rainy and everybody stayed home so I could have the waterfalls to myself. Hiked up to Wahclella first to dive into every eddy I could find and climb to every vantage point I saw potential in. I basically ran back down the trail in my wetsuit hoping to warm myself up a little. Then drove over to Oneonta Gorge (in my suit - kinda weird). Climbed over the log jam and started making my way up the watery slot canyon. The feeling you get when you’re alone and it’s cold and rainy out walking knee deep up river through that tight gorge is a combination of fear and excitement. More excitement than anything, but I started imagining unreal situations like the creature from the black lagoon stalking me while I was looking through my view finder… You’re so humbled by the pace and power of the river while you try and get up it. It gets tougher further on when you’re forced to swim upstream for a while against the current. But at the end was an enormous firing waterfall all to myself. It’s so loud and blowing so hard… Pictures and words can’t recreate the experience. I suggest visiting. Summertime is another story though. Water levels are way down and the crowds are heavy. No bueno.
